A journey along the Sile River from Jesolo to Portegrandi

Sile River is the most significant resurgent river in Italy. It originates between Padua and Treviso and flows into the Adriatic Sea, separating the coastline of Jesolo from that of Cavallino-Treporti. Its approximately 95 km course offers pristine natural landscapes protected by the Regional Natural Park of the Sile River. In this issue, we suggest a journey along the Sile River, starting from its beginning and following its course up towards Portegrandi. This itinerary provides biodiverse and natural scenery of great historical and environmental value, reachable by bicycle through the Sile Greenway cycle and pedestrian path. From the Lighthouse (the river mouth), follow the signs towards Cavallino-Treporti, then after crossing the bridge over the Sile, turn left passing under the bridge itself. Continuing, you will find the Cavallino basin and a path that leads to the historical city centre of Jesolo; along the way, you can also admire a border marker dating back to the 18th century. After traveling 3 km along the road towards Caposile, you can return to the cycle path. Caposile, located at the convergence of the Sile River and the Taglio del Sile canal, is recognisable for its two boat bridges, “Barche” and “Bilanciere”. From here, you will commence a long straight stretch with breath-taking views along the lagoon. After 8 km, you will arrive to Portegrandi, where you can take a break in the beautiful garden of the eponymous Inn. In the past, the natural commencement of the Sile River was located at Portegrandi, but in 1683, the Serenissima Republic diverted its course through the Taglio del Sile canal, which is now accessible along its lagoon embankment. The Sile River is a precious resource to be known and appreciated. Nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and culture seekers will certainly find something interesting along its banks. The River Sile is the perfect app to ensure that none of its wonders are missed.
