Kids | Memories of the sea

by Roberta Guiotto

For most of us, the summer vacation has come to an end, and we already miss it. We would like to remember the pleasant warmth of the sun’s rays on our skin, the scent of the sea, the warm sand beneath our feet, the seashells collected on the shore, the breathtaking sunsets…

So why not create a decorative painting with the colors and objects of the sea and bring a bit of summer into the walls of our homes? It’s a perfect activity to do together with our children, who can have fun with the seashells collected on the shore, the smoothed glass pieces shaped by the waves, the sand found in buckets stored in the closet, and the sticks from the many ice creams enjoyed during the summer… Let’s get to work!

We’ll need: small pieces of wood or sticks, acrylic or tempera paint, paintbrush, white glue, hot glue, cotton or jute twine, seashells, sand, glass pieces, and anything else that reminds us of our seaside vacation. Let’s clean the wooden pieces well and paint them with our favorite colors. Let them dry and then arrange them to form a flat panel, then secure them with hot glue on the back, using two or three transverse sticks. On the front and colored side of the panel, spread some glue, and if we want sand, we can pour it on the bottom and wait a few minutes before removing the excess. Then, we glue on the seashells and glass pieces. With the twine, we can create small words or mimic the waves of the sea. Finally, let’s create a loop or a cord to hang the painting at home or outside the door. This way, we can admire our private sea even in winter, eagerly awaiting the next magical summer by the sea.
