Jesolo bike ride between nature and history

by Manuel Pavanello

The bicycle journey among the beauties of Jesolo continues and wherever you are, we suggest, once you have travelled via Cristo Re, to exit the route by taking via Parco Rimembranza, in the direction of piazza Matteotti. Keeping to the right, take via Sant’Antonio to reach the Town Hall area, where in the council chamber a marble slab is engraved with the names of the mayors from 1867 to today. Next to this building there are two marble monuments, reference points for commemorations in honour of the armed forces, including one dedicated to the fallen in peacekeeping missions around the world and one to the Guardia di Finanza.  All around you will be immersed in the picturesque Parco del Sile, a verdant area characterized by weeping willows, games for little ones, picnic tables and, from time to time, a few swans frolicking on the grass. There is also a covered point equipped for bicycle maintenance. Leaving via Sant’Antonio, in the direction of via Dragojesolo, you will find the ancient lagoon boundary stone dating to 1791 n°52, just like the one previously encountered in via Cristo Re, only blacker. Once along via Sant’Antonio towards via Dragojesolo, on the left the old Town Hall (ex Casa del Littorio) can be seen with an adjoining old printing house and on the right the Ponte della Vittoria, which temporarily interrupts the Sile park area. After a few kilometres of pedalling, on the right, you will find the last stage of our journey, Torre Caligo. It is an ancient early medieval fortress created to collect the toll for transportation of goods. However, it became useless with the opening of the Porte del Cavallino at the end of the 17th century.
