“Drive safely, culture for life” – Pt. 4

by Manuel Nardin

An electric scooter is not a toy

The most fashionable transportation mode right now. Eco-friendly, easy to carry and park, simple to use, and affordable. However, because of these reasons, its dangers are underestimated. We are talking about the electric scooter, which can be used from 14 years of age. Whilst under the age of 18, wearing a helmet is mandatory. Riding with a passenger, on pavements, carrying animals or objects, towing, or being towed are not allowed. Both hands must be on the handlebars at all times, except when signalling a turn. Parking is allowed in spaces reserved for bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles. The maximum speed is 20 km/h, while in pedestrian areas, the limit is set at 6 km/h. Currently, the rules state that outside urban areas, scooters can only circulate on bike lanes. Circulation within urban areas is permitted on urban roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h, pedestrian areas, pedestrian and bike paths, bike lanes, roads with bike priority, dedicated bike lanes, and lanes where bicycle circulation is allowed. For rural roads, the clarification of the regulation, which was written in February 2022, explains that electric scooters can only circulate on bike lanes or other paths reserved for bicycle traffic. In addition to the CE mark, they must be equipped with speed regulators and a bell for acoustic signalling. From half an hour after sunset and during the day, electric scooters can only circulate on public roads if they have a fixed white or yellow light at the front and a fixed red light at the rear, both turned on. They must also be equipped with rear red reflectors. From half an hour after sunset, the rider must wear a reflective vest. Safety comes first, especially during the summer period. We are talking about a means of transportation, not a toy. Let’s think, dear friends, let’s think.
