Kids | The summer smells like lavender

by Roberta Guiotto

Lavender immediately reminds us of its intense scent and unmistakable colour, in fact it is one of the most used plants both in cosmetics and in herbal medicine. The flowering period coincides with the summer season, when it is possible to admire enchanting lilac fields stretching as far as the eye can see. With the help of children, let’s see how to use it, bearing in mind that aromatic plants have a balsamic time – i.e. a limited period when there is the maximum concentration of active ingredients – and this depends on various actors such as age, altitude, soil type, moon phase and weather.

The ideal way is to pick up the plants while respecting the work of insects (when the bees leave the flowers). You can use this virtuous flower in many ways: potpourri, bath salts, herbal teas, flavoured water and scented bags for drawers, wardrobes, cars, the bedside table or under the pillow as an anti-stress. Its relaxing properties will help us rest and relieve tension.

This is what you need to prepare the bags in a few simple steps: dried lavender, breathable fabric (cotton, linen or tulle), a pair of scissors and a coloured ribbon.

Dry the lavender upside down in a ventilated environment for 1 week. Cut out a 25 cm square of fabric and put 3 tablespoons of clean lavender in the middle, fold the fabric, close with a bow and your bags are ready. The scent of lavender will last for a long time – even more than a year – and when it starts to fade, rub gently to revive it. Have fun using different colours of tulle and making several layers of different colours and transparencies, decorated with beads. In short, free your imagination together with your children.

In the picture (by Alberto Callegher) it is possible to admire the flowering of the lavender labyrinth of the Onde della Terra farm in Jesolo.
