The climate is sick!

By Vincenzo Clarizia

One of the most fascinating phenomena existing in nature is the water cycle. This evaporates due to the sun, enters the atmosphere as vapor, becomes cloud, precipitates to the ground, enters rivers, returns to the sea, and so the cycle begins again. The problem is that global warming is accelerating this mechanism with the result that salty waters are getting saltier and fresh waters are getting fresher. The result is an intensification of the cycle, with some regions suffering from copious rainfall and flooding and others from persistent droughts. The Mediterranean in recent decades is becoming the scene of severe heat waves and flooding rainfall, and we have noticed this even in our own small way. Referring to the meteorological data recorded in Jesolo, in fact, the summer months saw an increase in average temperatures of more than 2° and a drought that lasted throughout October. Autumn, which started quietly, has managed to unleash some circumstantial aspects that fall right under climate change, namely extreme events! What happened on Nov. 22 can be referred to the criticality of this “sick” climate; the causes are to be found in the last few seasons that have turned out to be anomalous. The continuation of hot weather until October, where the daily maximum temperature was always above 20 degrees, caused the sea to retain summer heat beyond measure and, at the first real Atlantic disturbance, to produce so much water vapor that within a record-breaking depression caused extreme phenomenology. Just think, in less than 20 hours 1/4 of the annual precipitation fell. This, combined with strong winds and an exceptional tide, contributed to severe disruptions throughout the Venetian coastal towns, with periodic beach erosion. Man seems increasingly helpless in the face of such events, which are bound to increase in both frequency and intensity, and our hope is placed in the decisions of the “great ones of the earth” who we hope will be able to offer adequate solutions so that we can deliver to our children a less extreme and more serene climate, in every sense!
