Piazza Brescia: the heart of the lido

By Giovanni Cagnassi

It contends with Piazza Drago and Piazza Mazzini for the sceptre of the most important square at the main gateway to the Lido. Piazza Brescia is now the agora of services, tourism and all-round social life. Central and strategic, it is no longer the Cinderella among squares, but one of the most popular with residents and guests. It extends right into the centre of lido and over the decades has gained in importance thanks mainly to the palaces and buildings that house the tourism and hospitality offices. From the Kursaal and tourist promotion company to the Palaturismo, Piazza Brescia is a reference point for tourist information. Events, exhibitions, round tables are organised. There is no shortage of interpreters and re- ceptionists to help guests find the best destination. Its recently renovated fountain in the central area is surrounded by greenery and plants, often the scene of events, in particular sand sculptures in the summer version. Piazza Brescia is dedicated to the first Lombard entrepreneurs who were engaged in the post-war reclamation of the area, then Cavazuccherina. The turning point came in the mid-1960s. It was chosen as the headquarters of the then Autonomous Tourist Board. Then came the post office and other offices of trade associations, service providers and professionals. Today it is also home to museums and exhibitions behind it, such as the Tropicarium and the Science Factory, while the large Ferris wheel is also located in the Piazza Brescia area.
