Interview with Antonio Cabrini
“The National Team, a consecration”
He attacked and defended with the same intensity. So much to be considered one of the strongest full-backs in history, a model also for future generations. Antonio Cabrini, in this summer of European football championships, is among the most loved Azzurri characters. World champion in 1982, we met him in Caorle, guest of the three-day event “Chiamare le cose con il loro nome”.
What does it mean to wear the Azzurri jersey?
It is the consecration of your profession, coming to high levels. Joining the national team and wearing the Azzurri jersey is the best: it means representing your country against the others.
1982 World Cup. What do you carry with you after all these years?
The union of a group that, besides being a great team, managed to give Italy immense happiness by winning the World Cup.
Has today’s football changed so much compared to what it used to be?
Yes. I wouldn’t say two different sports, but a lot has changed.
You are one of the greatest full-backs in history. Even that role, compared to then, has changed. Hasn’t it?
It’s even more difficult because teams close better. There is a game that is no longer vertical but rather horizontal: you find a lot less space and they don’t give you the chance to play your game.
Juventus is in your heart. What future do you see for La Signora?
Juve’s future is always to be a protagonist and try to win as much as possible. This, I believe, is the club’s idea.
Female’s football is becoming more and more popular. What was the experience of coaching the women’s national team?
It was a very good experience, very positive, completely different from coaching a men’s team.
Will we see you again on any bench?
No, I don’t think so.
The coach you’ll always carry in your heart?
Definitely Bearzot.
And your partner?
I’ll name one. Absolutely Paolo! (Paolo Rossi ed.).
