Transportation of children on board, a few simple rules for their safety

The transport of children in vehicles is regulated by article 172 of the Traffic laws. Children under 1.50 m in height must be secured to an approved child seat suitable for their weight and height. The presence of front airbags can pose a serious danger to children. Therefore, the child seat must never be installed on the front seat of a car equipped with an airbag on the passenger side, unless previously deactivated. The safest place is the central rear seat as it is the most protected in case of both a frontal and side impact. The failure to use the mandatory child seat or the use of a non-approved system will result in a fine ranging from €83 to €332 for the driver of the vehicle and a reduction of 5 points from the driving licence. If one of the child’s parents is also present in the vehicle, and is not driving, the parent will be sanctioned (excluding the point deduction) instead of the driver. However, there are some exceptions. Children who board a taxi or a rental car with driver do not need any special safety systems, but two conditions must be met: they must sit in the back seat and must be accompanied by a person over 16 years of age. In case of large families, things get complicated. Before the birth of the fourth child, parents should consider purchasing a more spacious car with more passenger seats. It is worth stressing that some car models have a wider and more spacious rear part and are equipped with 3 Isofix systems. The alternative is to buy a larger car approved for the transport of more than 5 persons.  Always remember: never hold your child in your arms, not even for very short stretches. Just think that a child weighing 15 kg, at around 50 km/h, produces an impact force of 220 kg that cannot be borne by the arms! Be patient if your child screams, but always fasten his/her seat belt; you may entertain him/her with his favourite toy, but avoid lollipops or breadsticks, because they may be dangerous in case of sudden braking. In conclusion, dear parents and grandparents, please remember that the safety of our children comes first.
