An interview with Jesolo Mayor Christofer De Zotti

“From Jesolo a strong message of peace”

by Alessio Conforti

The countdown to the end of the year has begun and the traditional festive mood accompanies Lido, town and hamlets. The right setting to look forward to 2023 with confidence and optimism.

  • Mayor De Zotti, what kind of Christmas will this be for Jesolo?

The hope is that Jesolo will be able to give joy and serenity to all who visit. We have been working to festively decorate the city and create the magical atmosphere that is only proper to Christmas, keeping in mind the complex moment we are going through and the difficulties that everyone, families and businesses, have to face due to rising costs.

  • On what lines have you moved?

We have identified a new location for the Jesolo Sand Nativity, we have moved to direct management of the Christmas Village spaces, and we have redesigned the entire lighting system to keep costs down. Not to mention a wide cultural offer with concerts, shows and workshops for children. At the same time we have doubled the spaces of the ice nativity scene, bringing to Piazza Milano the one made of stones and in the historic center the New Year’s Eve, with the midnight fireworks display.

  • As many events as ever, but there is no shortage of novelties despite the difficult period. What are you and your council most proud of?

All the municipal offices involved in the organization of the various events did a great job, and that is what we are most proud of. I emphasize, because of the particular historical moment we are going through, the important message that will start this year from the ‘Sculptures of Peace’ of the Jesolo Sand Nativity, which will be inaugurated in the presence of Patriarch Francesco Moraglia and the Bishop of Kiev, Monsignor Oleksandr Yazlovetskiy.

  • Let’s go back a few weeks. Thanks to the weather, a completely unexpected seasonal lengthening was experienced. Looking ahead, how can receptivity and hospitality be improved?

We have experienced a season beyond our wildest expectations, in line with pre-pandemic levels overall and even better at certain times. As an administration we have the task of creating optimal conditions to nurture tourism and extend the seasonality.

  • Where do we start?

We need to equip ourselves with tools that allow us to objectively assess what the impact of each individual event is and, consequently, support those that are truly performing. At that point we can evaluate whether to replace, eliminate or add others. This path would allow us to have immediate benefits but also in perspective and in terms of promoting the location on each channel.

  • With the holidays over, it is already time to look forward to summer 2023. What new things are in store for us?

One of the aspects on which we are placing utmost attention is that of security. In 2022, with targeted actions and constant presence in the busiest parts of the city alongside other institutions and law enforcement agencies, we have launched a message of zero tolerance towards those who do not respect Jesolo. In the meantime, we have staffed the local police force with new personnel and started a process of its reorganization that will lead, among other things, to the creation of the new Urban Security Core.

  • What is the goal?

To arrive at the summer with a package of shared ordinances and tools, already approved, ready to be applied right away. Certain behaviors that harm residents, businesses, guests and the very image of Jesolo are no longer allowed.

  • Finally, what do you wish the citizens in these festive days and what promise do you feel like making to them?

My wish is that these holidays bring a lot of happiness to every home and fulfill some dreams, with a view to a fruitful 2023 for everyone. And maybe less complicated than the last three years we have left behind. We, and this is the promise, will not stop a day to accompany Jesolo towards a new season, as a true seaside town, welcoming for all tourists but, before that, a place for Jesolo residents, old and new.
